I always thought the Bible was boring, irrelevant and not worth reading. I appreciated it may have held some good moral principles, and I could see the purpose in that. But, I thought it was only for the weird religious people. It was outdated and, I assumed, entirely false. I didn’t understand how an infinite Divine Being could be contained in the pages of Scripture. It didn’t seem relevant to our society today.
I have sincerely and humbly changed my mind about this. I actually don’t think I could have been any more wrong.
The Bible is described as a Light unto our feet. And what does a light do? It guides us through the present day darkness. A light will always show you which path to take.
As I have read through the letters, the accounts, the poetry, prophecy and wisdom all those years ago, they are very much still relevant today. As I have done so, I have been guided into truth, like a light for my path.
The Gospel accounts, of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, speak of the eye witness accounts of the life, ministry and teachings of Jesus. The words reveal the person of God. As we look to Jesus, we understand the nature of God. It reveals a God that delights to heal His people. A God who is saddened by the sickness and torment of our suffering. A God that compassionately forgives and extends mercy. A God who reveals the beauty of another way, a path leading us straight back into comfort of His presence. A God who loves us deeply and more true than anyone or anything in this world ever could. A God that would willingly and so freely choose to die in our place, that we might live in His place. The Bible is the story that reveals the wonders of this Divine Exchange: His life for ours. He took our death that we might have His life. A life that begins and will never ever end.
I have come to understand the Bible is a map into the heart of God.
God. It reveals His majesty, but also His humanity. God did not step out of Heaven and write the Bible Himself. Instead, it was written by men and women throughout the generations of time, inspired by encounters with Him, written through His leading, with history, prophecy, poetry, testimonies, and teachings. The Bible truly is the inspired Word of God.
I may not be able to speak for everyone, but I can say this. The Bible has, and is continuing to, change my life. I hear the tender whispers of God Himself in that red ink. And if it is God who speaks, then I must surely listen. I would much rather hear from God, than anything else this world has to offer.
